Bryological and Lichenological Section/ABLS ARIYO, OLUSESAN AYODELE [1]. The Biology & Phytochemistry of Riccia nigerica Jones. The Biology and Phytochemistry composition of young and old mats of Riccia nigerica Jones have been studied. Detailed observations of the plant were carried out. Transverse and longitudinal (vertical) sections of the thallus were made and observed under the microscope. Five fractions were obtained through column chromatography. The absorbance spectra of the five fractions of the five fractions of the extracts showed a fluctuation from 0 to 1.18 at 400 to 950 wave-lengths for the young mat and absorbance of 0 to 1.20 at 400-950 wave-lengths in the old mat The were tested against some selected of bacteria and fungi. The test extract was found to have an inhibitory effect as indicated by zone of inhibition on Bacillus substilis , Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Shigella dysenterae, Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus and Rhizopus sp.The implications of the efficacy of the extracts as antibiotics is discussed.
