Teaching Section Bangera, M. Gita [1], Christensen, Martha [2], Peppe, Caroline [3], Jessup, Chad [4], Gargas, Andrea [5]. Examination of Aspergillus and Penicillum spp. genetic characters, a ComGen Project. As Community college Genomic (ComGen) projects, students are sequencing identifying genetic characters (rDNA and beta-tubulin sequences) associated with Martha Christensen’s soil fungal collections of Penicillium and Aspergillus spp. (Ascomycota, Eurotiales). ComGen, based at Bellevue College, WA introduces a mini-graduate school experience for community college students, including hands-on research projects. Starting from a prerequisite of a basic course in biology, students learn the essential skills of graduate-level researchers. Students perform original research, trouble-shoot their experiments, organize lab meetings and journal clubs, and network within the greater scientific community.
