Systematics Section Ocampo, Gilberto [1], Columbus, J. Travis [2]. Phylogenetic relationships within Portulaca sect. Portulaca (Portulacaceae). Portulaca (Portulacaceae) comprises ca. 100 species distributed worldwide. This study involves the ca. 20 species of section Portulaca (subgenus Portulaca sensu Legrand 1958), which includes P. oleracea, one of the most widespread weeds in the world. Sampling consisted of 14 species and eight subspecific taxa in the P. oleracea complex. We obtained an estimate of their relationships from analysis of the nuclear ribosomal ITS region and three chloroplast markers (ndhF, psbD-trnT, and the ndhA intron) using parsimony, maximum likelihood, and Bayesian methods. The section appears to have its origins in South America, and P. oleracea was found not to be monophyletic. Biogeographical patterns and the taxonomic status of the taxa are also discussed.
